Ifakara Health Institute (IHI), is headquartered in Mikocheni, Dar es Salaam. The Dar es Salaam branch was initially established as a central coordination office, and now hosts the offices of the IHI directorate, including the offices of the Chief Executive Director, Director of Science, Chief Finance and Systems Officer and Chief Human Resources and Administration. The branch hosts various centralized organs of the institute, including finance and administration services, human resources, procurement, transport and logistics. Additionally the branch is the base for various Research support units including Institutional Review Board (IRB), Data Systems Unit; Knowledge Management and Communications, Grants and Contracts office, Public Engagement and Partnerships team, and Information Communication Technology (ICT) unit.
The Branch of IHI facilitates close collaborations with national and international partners, stakeholders and program partners. Some of the national partners include the National Institute of Medical Research (NIMR, Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH), Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority (TFDA) and the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children (MoHCDGEC). The branch also facilitates partnerships with our bilateral partners and other international organizations, through continuous engagement.

IHI Data Systems and Platforms
High-quality data is the necessary ingredients for producing high quality statistics and deliver proper research outcomes. It also results in efficient data analysis and data sharing while also guaranteeing the value of the data.
Research Quality Assurance
The Research Quality Assurance Unit is an institutional unit established under the Directorate to help researchers ensure the integrity of their research projects. The main function of the unit is to ensure all research conducted by IHI and partners adheres to clearly defined standards to be followed during the entire period of the study (from protocol development, data collection & analysis to publications) and comply with the set standards.
Institutional Review Board
The Ifakara Health Institute Institutional Review Board (IHI IRB) is an independent Ethical Review Board which operates under the umbrella of Ifakara Health Institute. The present IRB has been in operation since 2004. Given its importance in guiding the conduct of all our research, and especially clinical trials involving humans, the unit was significantly revamped in 2006.
Public engagement and Partnerships
IHI prides itself on its high levels of engagement with the communities it works with. It believes that it must explain to all our stakeholders all that we do and also why we do it, and also and how the work might benefit the community. We believe that our work must be driven by the needs of our stake holders, including the ublic, the communities whre we work, the study participants, the government, our funding partners and our collaborators.
Grants and Contracts Office
The grants and contracts office monitors and supports implementation of all sponsored research projects, from the time these projects are conceived, through entire project life cycles, until the time when these projects are eventually closed. The office reviews and coordinates the sponsored project proposals, and leads negotiations towards successful award of grants or contract awards or amendments, including any sub-awards and subcontracts.
Knowledge Management and Communications
The Knowledge Management and Communications unit shares synthesized new information, in simplified popular versions, via short media briefings, social media and visits. The team mediates our media relations and and organizes interviews with local or international media houses. The team also maintains IHI’s Digital Library, which is currently the largest online repository of health literature, including some rare digitized grey literature, but also numerous scientific publications and reports.
