COMMEMORATION: Momentous Day as Tanzania Union turns 61!

Today, April 26 marks a momentous day in the Tanzania’s history — which marks the Union between the Republic of Tanganyika and the People’s Republic of Zanzibar, which led to the formation of the United Republic of Tanzania in 1964.
This historic Union, inspired by the visionary leadership of Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere and his counterpart, Sheikh Abeid Amani Karume, laid the foundation for a unified, peaceful, and resilient nation in the east African coast – Tanzania.
As Tanzania turns 61 today, we reflect on the strength of the unity and the progress achieved through collaboration, solidarity, and shared purpose. Union Day is not just a celebration of history, but a reminder of the values that continue to guide Tanzania’s development journey.
The Ifakara Health Institute joins all Tanzanians in honoring this important day. Together, we celebrate a legacy of unity and look ahead with hope and commitment to building a healthier and stronger Tanzania.
