Physician, Researcher, Project Leader

PD Dr. Martin Rohacek is a Physician, Researcher, and Project Leader overseeing the Heart and Lung Clinic, Intermediate Care Unit, and Emergency Department at St Francis Referral Hospital in Ifakara, Tanzania.

His educational journey includes studies in Germanistics and Human Medicine at the University of Zürich, Switzerland. With board certifications in Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine, he earned his Graduate thesis (Dissertation) on Bacterial colonization and infection of electrophysiological cardiac devices at the University of Basel in 2010.

Dr Rohacek's professional experience spans various medical roles, including Assistant Doctor positions at Kantonsspital Winterthur and Kantonsspital Bruderholz. He also engaged in research fellowship in Immunology at the University of Basel and served as a Family Doctor and Doctor at Medecins Sans Frontiers in Myanmar. His leadership roles include Senior Physician positions at Kantonsspital Luzern, University Hospital Bern, and University Hospital Basel.

Since 2015, Dr Rohacek has been a Senior Physician, Project Leader, and Researcher at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, Ifakara Health Institute, and St Francis Referral Hospital in Tanzania. He holds various certifications, including Sonography and Point of Care Sonography by the Swiss Society for Ultrasound (SGUM). Dr Rohacek received the Else Kröner Fresenius Award for Development Cooperation in Medicine in 2019 and obtained his Dr habil and Venia Docendi from the University of Basel in 2022.

His research and implementation projects as a leading investigator include initiatives such as Emergency Department projects, studies on heart diseases and echocardiography in rural Tanzania, and the use of ultrasound for the management of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. He is actively involved in projects related to the Heart-and Lung Disease Clinic in Ifakara, with funding from foundations like Else Kröner Fresenius Stiftung. Dr Rohacek's contributions extend to strengthening health systems, establishing care and referral chains for managing non-communicable diseases in hard-to-reach populations in rural Tanzania.

Dr Rohacek is a Professor in Internal Medicine at the University of Basel, Switzerland. He is a member of various medical societies, including SGIM (Swiss Society for Internal Medicine), SGUM (Swiss Society for Ultrasound in Medicine), and EFSUMB (European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology).
