A dedicated Laboratory Technician

Faima Isihaka is a dedicated Laboratory technician specializing in Mycobacteriology at the Bagamoyo branch of the Ifakara Health Institute. She obtained her diploma in Laboratory Technology from Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) in 2018 and has since become an integral part of tuberculosis research initiatives.

Since joining the Ifakara Health Institute in 2019, Faima has been deeply involved in clinical research and analytical procedures focused on Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Her expertise spans AFB microscopy, Molecular detection, TB cultures, drug susceptibility testing, and DNA extraction for Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS).

Faima's professional journey is marked by significant contributions to various clinical research projects, including:

TB Dar Cohort, A project aimed at prospectively collecting clinical data and biological specimens to study tuberculosis epidemiology, molecular epidemiology, and the evaluation of new diagnostics and biomarkers, FujiLAM trial: A prospective multicenter evaluation of the Fujifilm SILVAMP TB LAM Test for diagnosing tuberculosis in people living with HIV. eFASH: A randomized controlled two-center study investigating the role of ultrasound in managing tuberculosis. VPM1002: A multicenter, phase III study evaluating the efficacy and safety of VPM1002 compared to BCG in preventing Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in newborn infants and STEP 2C TB trial: A multiple-arm, multiple-stage (MAMS), phase 2B/C trial assessing experimental treatments for newly diagnosed smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis.

Faima's diligent work and expertise have been instrumental in the successful execution of these projects, contributing significantly to the advancement of tuberculosis research. Her active involvement in the Biotechnology and Laboratory Science Association (BLSA) reflects her commitment to professional development and staying updated on the latest advancements in her field.
