A significant chapter in the history of Ifakara Health Institute came to a close today as Dr. Honorati Masanja officially handed over the leadership of the Institute to Dr. Ally Olotu, marking the beginning of a new era for one of Africa’s longstanding public health research institutions.

The official handover ceremony took place at Ifakara’s Mikocheni Office in Dar es Salaam, the Institute’s current headquarters, bringing together staff to witness the transition from a leader who has guided the organisation for the past decade to a scientist who has spent much of his career growing within its own corridors.

The occasion was both a farewell and a beginning.

It offered staff an opportunity to reflect on Dr. Masanja’s 10 years as Chief Executive Director, celebrate his contribution to the Institute, and welcome Dr. Olotu as the new leader who will carry Ifakara’s mission forward.

A decade comes to a close

Dr. Masanja has served as Ifakara’s Chief Executive Director for 10 years, overseeing a period of significant institutional development and transformation.

During his tenure, the Institute strengthened its systems, scientific portfolio, partnerships and organisational capacity, while increasingly embracing digital approaches across its operations, research, data, finance and communications. His departure comes at a particularly symbolic moment.

In 2026, Ifakara is celebrating 70 years of impact—providing an opportunity to reflect on seven decades of scientific discovery, innovation, capacity strengthening and contributions to public health in Tanzania and beyond.

Dr. Masanja’s decade at the helm therefore forms an important part of the Institute’s broader 70-year story.

Staff say farewell

The ceremony began with staff gathering in the Main Conference Hall, with colleagues also participating virtually through Zoom.

Following opening and welcome remarks by the Branch Administrator, members of staff had an opportunity to share their reflections on Dr. Masanja’s leadership and the memories they have built during his time as CED.

The employee remarks brought together different perspectives from across the Institute, reflecting on the outgoing leader’s contribution, his interactions with staff and the changes witnessed under his leadership. The farewell continued with remarks from Dr. Masanja, as colleagues listened to his reflections on his decade at the helm.

A farewell with memories—and a cake

The formal reflections were followed by moments of celebration, including the cutting of a farewell cake and the presentation of a farewell gift to Dr. Masanja on behalf of the Institute.

The gestures provided a lighter, personal moment in an otherwise historic occasion—bringing together colleagues to celebrate a leader whose professional journey has been closely intertwined with Ifakara for decades.

The handover: one chapter closes, another begins

The defining moment of the ceremony came with the formal handover. Dr. Masanja delivered his handover speech before officially passing the leadership responsibilities to Dr. Olotu. The symbolic transfer marked more than a change of office. It represented the continuation of an institution whose story has evolved across generations of scientific and institutional leadership.

Receiving the responsibility, Dr. Olotu delivered his first speech as Ifakara’s incoming Chief Executive Director.

A scientist shaped by Ifakara

Dr. Olotu brings to the position extensive experience in public health research, scientific leadership and international collaboration. An Oxford-trained scientist, he has built a distinguished career in infectious disease epidemiology, malaria research, immunology, vaccines and clinical trials. His relationship with Ifakara, however, goes beyond his scientific credentials.

Before his appointment as Chief Executive Director, Dr. Olotu served as Director of Science, following years of research and leadership within the Institute. He has also served in senior scientific roles, including leadership of the Interventions and Clinical Trials Department at Ifakara’s Bagamoyo Clinical Trials Facility.

His appointment therefore represents both renewal and continuity—bringing new leadership while retaining deep institutional knowledge.

From one generation to the next

With the handover complete, Dr. Olotu now becomes the 13th director in Ifakara’s 70-year history and the fifth Tanzanian to lead the Institute. His appointment adds another chapter to a leadership journey that began with Ifakara’s founder, Prof. Rudolf Geigy, and continued through successive international and Tanzanian leaders who helped shape the institution into what it is today.

Among the Tanzanian leaders were Dr. Andrew Kitua, Dr. Hassan Mshinda, Dr. Salim Abdulla and Dr. Honorati Masanja.

Now, Dr. Olotu takes his place in that history.

Looking ahead

As staff gathered for a group photograph following the handover, the significance of the moment was clear.

There was a sense of an ending—but also of anticipation.

Dr. Masanja leaves behind a decade of leadership and a legacy that will form part of Ifakara’s institutional memory.

Dr. Olotu now takes responsibility for building on that foundation and guiding the Institute into its next chapter.

And the timing could not be more fitting.

As Ifakara celebrates 70 years of impact, a new leader is taking the helm to help shape what comes next.

The first 70 years have been defined by scientific discovery, partnerships, innovation and a commitment to improving health.

The next chapter will build on that foundation.

One leader hands over. Another steps forward. The mission continues.
