The Ifakara Health Institute congratulates Prof. Bruno Sunguya on his appointment as Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Tanzania.

This is a significant appointment and recognition of Prof. Sunguya’s experience and contribution to health research, education and public health in Tanzania.

As he takes on this important national responsibility, we wish him every success in his new role and look forward to his continued contribution to strengthening Tanzania’s health systems and transforming lives of people in Tanzania and beyond.

More: About Prof. Sunguya

Bruno Fokas Sunguya is a Professor of Public Health Nutrition and a medical doctor, with more than 15 years of experience in research, training, consultancy and academic leadership. Until his recent appointment as Chief Medical Officer of the Government of Tanzania, Prof. Sunguya served as Deputy Vice Chancellor – Research and Consultancy at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), a position he was appointed to in November 2025. 

Prior to becoming Deputy Vice Chancellor, he served as Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor – Research and Consultancy (2022–2025), Director of Research and Publications (2018–2022) and Acting Director of Research and Publications (2017–2018) at MUHAS.

On 27 September 2026, Prof. Sunguya was appointed Chief Medical Officer of the Government of Tanzania, taking on a senior national leadership role in the management and coordination of public health services.
