FORUM: Ifakara participates in Tanzania Immunology Society’s inaugural Annual General Meeting

The Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) participated in the first Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Tanzania Immunology Society (TIS), held on October 30, 2026, at the University of Dar es Salaam’s Main Campus, bringing together researchers, healthcare professionals, academic institutions, policymakers and other stakeholders to advance immunological sciences in Tanzania.

The inaugural meeting provided a platform for scientific dialogue, knowledge exchange and collaboration, with discussions centred on strengthening immunological research, education and its application in addressing public health challenges.

Strengthening scientific collaboration and research

Organised by TIS, the meeting focused on identifying strategic priorities and opportunities for collaboration among institutions working in immunological sciences.

A key area of focus was the importance of establishing collaborative frameworks that promote scientific partnerships, facilitate knowledge sharing and strengthen the application of immunological research in disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

The meeting also highlighted the value of bringing together expertise from research institutions, healthcare facilities and academic organisations to advance scientific understanding and support evidence-based approaches to improving health outcomes.

Building Africa’s capacity for immunological research

Strengthening Africa’s capacity to conduct advanced immunological research is essential to addressing the continent’s evolving health challenges and ensuring that scientific discoveries translate into locally relevant solutions.

With its established laboratory infrastructure and expertise across several areas of health research, IHI recognises the importance of investing in modern research facilities, specialised technical skills and the next generation of African scientists.

Building this capacity will enable African research institutions to undertake increasingly complex scientific investigations, generate locally relevant evidence and contribute more effectively to global advances in immunology.

Through its laboratory facilities, research programmes and partnerships with national and international institutions, IHI continues to support scientific capacity development, knowledge exchange and opportunities for research innovation.

Advancing locally led research and partnerships

IHI’s participation in the meeting reflects its commitment to strengthening Tanzania’s scientific research ecosystem and supporting African-led approaches to addressing public health priorities.

Collaboration through professional scientific networks such as TIS offers opportunities to connect researchers, share expertise and encourage institutional partnerships that can strengthen immunological research and training.

As IHI marks 70 years of advancing health research and innovation, its engagement in such initiatives reinforces the importance of sustained investment in scientific infrastructure, research leadership and institutional collaboration to support the next generation of discoveries.

The inaugural TIS Annual General Meeting represents an important step towards building a stronger, more connected immunology research community in Tanzania, with the potential to contribute to scientific advancement and improved health outcomes across Africa.
