IFAKARA @70: Grand anniversary celebrations await as Ifakara turns 70
The Ifakara Health Institute is set to mark its 70th anniversary with a Grand Event along with its 5th Annual Scientific Conference from November 10–12, 2026, at the APC Hotel & Conference Centre in Dar es Salaam.
The landmark and historic event will bring together scientists, policymakers, development partners and other stakeholders to reflect on seven decades of scientific excellence, innovation and contributions to public health.
Held under the theme “70 Years of Impact: Roots, Reach, and What’s Next,” the event will provide an opportunity to celebrate the Institute's scientific achievements, recognise the partnerships that have shaped its journey and explore emerging opportunities for advancing health research and innovation in Tanzania, Africa and beyond.
Seven decades of science and impact
Since its establishment in 1956, Ifakara has grown into a leading health research institution, contributing scientific evidence, innovations and expertise to address pressing public health challenges.
From its pioneering work in malaria and vector-borne diseases to its expanding research in health systems, clinical trials, infectious and non-communicable diseases, the Institute has continued to generate knowledge and develop solutions that inform health policies, strengthen healthcare delivery and improve lives.
Over the past seven decades, Ifakara has worked alongside government institutions, academic partners, research organisations and communities to translate scientific discoveries into meaningful public health impact.
The 70th anniversary represents an opportunity not only to celebrate these achievements but also to acknowledge the people, institutions and partnerships that have contributed to the Institute's growth and success.
Exploring science and innovation in Bagamoyo
The celebrations will continue on November 13, 2026, with an Open House at Institute's Bagamoyo research facilities. The Open House will offer participants an opportunity to experience scientific work firsthand through guided visits to key research and training facilities, including the Clinical Trial Facility, the Laboratory, the Transmission Zero lab, the Vector Control Product Testing Unit (VCPTU) and the Training and Capacity Building Unit.
The visits will showcase the Institute's research infrastructure, technological innovations and capacity-building initiatives while creating opportunities for engagement with scientists and research teams.
Looking ahead to the next chapter
As Ifakara celebrates 70 years of scientific contributions, the anniversary also marks an important moment to reflect on the future of health research and the Institute's role in addressing emerging health challenges.
Building on its legacy of scientific excellence, collaboration and innovation, Ifakara remains committed to generating evidence, strengthening research capacity and advancing solutions that contribute to healthier communities.
The Ifakara @70 celebrations will honour the Institute's roots, recognise the reach of its scientific contributions and inspire the next generation of discoveries and partnerships.
