Today, Ifakara Health Institute inaugurated a new laboratory located at Kingani area in Bagamoyo. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Seif Shekalaghe, grace the opening occasion alongside the Swiss Ambassador to Tanzania Didier Chassot.

The facility was built by Ifakara Health Institute with the financial support from the Government of Tanzania and that of Swiss Government, through the Swiss TPH – an organization focusing on addressing major global health challenges.

The bio-safety level II Lab observes the quality management system requirements for medical testing in areas of clinical chemistry, hematology, virology and parasitology. It supports different studies within and outside the Institute.

Ifakara is hoping that the quality work from the Lab will lead to better decision making, better policy, and better practices. The effectiveness of the Institute’s work depends to a considerable extent on maintaining a credible analytical capability – and that can be done in a state-of-the-art lab.

The Lab was unveiled at the end of the Swiss TPH tour for the Bagamoyo sites. The day-long visit was jam-packed with activities including the official opening of the new administration building and laboratory block at Kingani. The buildings’ construction was recently completed with support and funding from the Swiss government.
