Ifakara Health Institute scientists have contributed to a new book reviewing current and future strategies for controlling mosquito vectors of disease, with a particular focus on malaria control. The book, edited by Jacques Derek Charlwood and published last year, provides a comprehensive look into mosquito ecology, sampling methods, and various vector-borne disease control measures.

Ifakara researchers: Dr. Fredros Okumu and Dr. Emmanuel Kaindoa co-authored Chapter 09, titled Imagining the Future of Bed Nets for Malaria Control in Africa. Their contribution explores the evolving role of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) in malaria control and the need for a paradigm shift in their design and production.

The chapter highlights that while ITNs have multiple modes of action, innovation has mainly focused on bio-efficacy, overlooking durability, local production, and environmental impact. The researchers call for reinvention beyond insecticidal properties, advocating for greater investment in durability, accessibility, aesthetic appeal, and sustainability—particularly using biodegradable materials.

They also stress the need for a stronger private sector and local manufacturing to ensure a steady supply of affordable, high-quality nets. Shifting the focus beyond insecticides can drive broader innovations, improving effectiveness and user acceptance.
