TALK: Understanding how the body fights serious viral infections with Prof. McElroy from the U.S

The Ifakara Health Institute is proud to host a distinguished scientific talk exploring the immunology of acute viral infections, led by renowned pediatric infectious disease specialist, Prof. Anita McElroy. Prof. McElroy’s talk will help to understand how the body fights serious viral infections.
This event promises to be a valuable opportunity for researchers, clinicians, and students alike to deepen their understanding of the body’s immune response to viral threats.
The talk will take place on Thursday, 8 May 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 NOON, at the Kingani Clinical Trials Conference Room located within the Bagamoyo Offices of the Ifakara Health Institute. For those unable to attend in person, virtual participation is available via Zoom via the following link
About the Speaker
Dr. Anita McElroy is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and a member of the Center for Vaccine Research at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She also serves as a pediatric infectious disease physician at UPMC Children’s Hospital.
Dr. McElroy’s research is primarily focused on the pathogenesis of Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV), where she uses a combination of in vitro and in vivo models to unravel the complexities of host-pathogen interactions. She plays a leading role in human vaccine trials for RVFV in Africa and is actively involved in pandemic preparedness initiatives, particularly those aimed at identifying immune correlates of protection—critical markers that can guide future vaccine development.
In addition to her research, Dr. McElroy is deeply engaged in academic and professional service. She is an elected member of the Society for Pediatric Research, a long-time contributor to Pediatric Infectious Disease Society committees, and a standing member of the NIH VPI study section. She also serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Infectious Diseases and mentors graduate and medical students in microbiology and immunology.
