Ifakara Health Institute researcher, Dr. Gerry Killeen, will sit in the AXA Chair - a premium funding scheme of the AXA Research Fund – for the next 5 years. An official announcement of his selection was made during the second week of this month.

The AXA chair aims at creating a dedicated full-time senior academic position in an institution; supporting a significant acceleration in the development of a research field; and fostering a step-change in the career of the appointed AXA Professor. Its recipients are expected to hold at least a PhD with 10 years research minimum, to be of the highest caliber and should have demonstrated outstanding research achievements.

By committing to share two thirds of the funds (€1,000,000) provided by AXA with IHI and a local Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Tanzania and supplementing that with postgraduate degree scholarships for local scientists, The University College Cork (UCC) – an institution where the funds have been awarded through, is investing in strengthening resilience of the country at institutional level. #
