Dr. Mwele

The director of the Department of Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases at the World Health Organization (WHO) headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, Dr. Mwelecele Ntuli Malecela, widely known for a short form of her first name – “Mwele” died Thursday at the age of 58.

Dr. Mwelecele served in the Ifakara Health Institute Board of Trustees (BOT) for slightly over five years – from 2010 to 2016, therefore the Ifakara Health Institute Management and Staff have issued a condolence message following the death.

“Dr. Mwelecele also served in the Ifakara Health Institute Board from 2010-2016 during which she applied her rich background in institutional leadership to advance research at our Institute. Our hearts go out to Dr. Mwelecele’s family, relatives, friends, and the World Health Organization in this time of deep sorrow,” reads the condolence message issued by Acting Chief Executive Director, Dr. Sally Mtenga.

Dr. Mwelecele graduated with a Zoology degree from the University of Dar es Salaam before joining the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) in 1987 where she did a remarkable job in researching on lymphatic filariasis.

Later on, she pursued her masters and PhD degrees at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine between 1990 and 1995. She continued to work at the NIMR, rising to the position of director general – becoming the first woman to hold this position – during which she served in the Ifakara Board.
