Dr. Ally Olotu, the new Chief Executive Director of Ifakara Health Institute, assumes his new responsibilities on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, taking the reins of an institution marking a remarkable 70 years of scientific excellence and public health impact.

His appointment marks more than a change at the top.

It is the beginning of a new chapter.

After 10 years as Chief Executive Director, Dr. Honorati Masanja leaves behind a decade of institutional growth, scientific contribution and transformation, including the strengthening of systems and the Institute’s journey from predominantly paper-based ways of working towards increasingly digital systems across its operations, science and communications.

As Ifakara bids farewell to one chapter, it welcomes another—led by a scientist who knows the institution from within.

Dr. Olotu is not new to Ifakara. From his work in malaria research and clinical trials to his leadership as Director of Science, he has grown through the Institute’s scientific corridors, building a career that has taken him from Tanzania to international research collaborations, including his work with KEMRI in Kenya and his doctoral training at the University of Oxford.

He now becomes the 13th director in Ifakara’s 70-year history and the fifth Tanzanian to hold the position.
