"MTAFITI" - the monthly news and events round-up of Ifakara Health Institute - January 2026 edition is out.

The main theme of the current edition focuses on a new study by scientists from Tanzania and the UK that introduces a smarter way to detect disease outbreaks across animals, wildlife, and humans — helping public health teams respond faster and more accurately.

And topping the readers’ chart, this story was the most read across both the Ifakara website and social media platforms: scientists have discovered a naturally occurring fungus that can weaken malaria mosquitoes and restore the effectiveness of commonly used insecticides.

The round-up summarizes other reports, news, events, new projects and publications.

This month, the Ifakara Health Institute mourns with deep sorrow the passing of Dr. Prosper Chaki, Director of Resource Mobilization and Stakeholder Engagement, who passed away on 24 January 2026 at Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam. He was laid to rest on 28 January 2026 in Ifakara, Morogoro
