Today, 12 February 2026, Ifakara officially began the journey toward its 70th Anniversary, to be celebrated in November this year.

The symbolic launch event took place at VectorSphere in Ifakara, bringing together Ifakara’s Management, Board of Trustees, media, and staff — both in person and online.

The ceremony featured key milestone moments, including the unveiling of the 70th Anniversary logo, the launch of the commemorative events calendar, and the reveal of the dedicated anniversary webpage.

Transition to Homeland

The celebration then transitioned to the Homeland Hall, where participants were warmly welcomed by the Chief Executive Director, Dr. Honorati Masanja.

Dr. Masanja described the occasion as a significant milestone that marks the starting point of a year-long series of anniversary events leading up to November. He expressed sincere gratitude to stakeholders, partners, and staff — recognizing them as the heartbeat of the Institute and the driving force behind its 70 years of impact and continued scientific excellence.

Board Chair Abraham Mnzava delivered the opening remarks, expressing excitement about the milestone and reflecting on the Institute’s sustained growth and impact.

Representatives from the Ministry of Health and TAMISEMI highlighted the strong, long-standing collaboration with Ifakara, emphasizing its behind-the-scenes scientific contributions and the need to further amplify its work beyond malaria to broader health areas.

The District Commissioner also reaffirmed his support, noting the Institute’s central role in the growth and development of Ifakara town and committing to continued close collaboration.

Former Director Delivers Keynote

The first Tanzanian Scientific Director, Dr. Andrew Kitua, appointed in 1993, delivered the keynote address. He took the audience through a rich historical journey of the Institute, tracing its evolution over decades of scientific excellence.

His key message centered on gratitude — recognizing that it is the people who make Ifakara what it is today, emphasizing that institutions are built and sustained by the dedication of individuals.

The Journey Continues: Passing the Torch to the Youth

A central theme was the role of young scientists and professionals in carrying the torch forward, with particular emphasis on creating equal opportunities for young female scientists to thrive and lead. The message was clear: the future of Ifakara lies in empowering the next generation to build on 70 years of impact and drive even greater change in the decades ahead.
