FEATURE: Ifakara scientists highlights gene drive technology in the fight against malaria
Ifakara Health Institute research scientists within the Transmission Zero project, Dr. Brian Tarimo and Gilbert Maganga, were featured on Azam TV news on 12 March 2026, where they highlighted the project’s work and its potential to transform malaria control.
During the segment, they explained how the initiative is advancing innovative scientific approaches aimed at interrupting malaria transmission at its source, the mosquito, by reducing its ability to carry and spread the parasite.
Dr Tarimo emphasized that these next-generation tools are designed to complement existing interventions like bed nets and insecticides, while also underscoring the importance of community engagement and regulatory oversight in ensuring their safe and responsible use.
