On March 11, 2026, a delegation from the International AIDS Society visited the Ifakara Health Institute’s Bagamoyo branch for a strategic engagement aimed at strengthening collaboration in the global fight against HIV. The visit brought together scientists, program leaders, and research staff to explore opportunities for partnership in HIV prevention, research, and capacity strengthening.

The session opened with welcoming remarks virtually from Ifakara’s Director of Science, Dr. Ally Olotu. He highlighted the Institute’s broad portfolio in health research, training, and clinical trials, emphasizing its role as one of Africa’s leading research institutions dedicated to improving health through scientific evidence.

Spotlight on the Chronic Diseases Clinic of Ifakara

A key highlight of the visit was a presentation on the Chronic Diseases Clinic of Ifakara (CDCI), delivered by Ifakara Research scientist and  CDCI's Clinician, Dr. Robert Ndege.

Dr. Ndege provided an overview of the clinic’s work in HIV care, treatment, and research, highlighting its role as one of Tanzania’s leading platforms for comprehensive HIV services and long-term patient management. He also outlined how CDCI integrates clinical care with research and training to strengthen the national response to HIV.

Advancing shared goals in HIV prevention

The International AIDS Society delegation shared remarks outlining the objectives of the engagement and opportunities for collaboration with Ifakara scientists. The discussion emphasized strengthening partnerships in HIV prevention research, expanding knowledge exchange, and supporting initiatives that accelerate progress toward ending the HIV epidemic.

As the world’s largest association of HIV professionals, the International AIDS Society plays a critical role in convening researchers, policymakers, and advocates to advance scientific knowledge and translate research into effective HIV responses worldwide.

Exploring cutting edge research infrastructure

As part of the visit, the delegation toured Ifakara’s Clinical Trial Facility and Bagamoyo Laboratory. The tour provided an opportunity for the visitors to observe the Institute’s research infrastructure and ongoing work supporting high-quality biomedical and clinical research. The visit also showcased the Institute’s capacity to conduct complex clinical studies and laboratory investigations that contribute to developing and evaluating new health interventions.

Strengthening the way forward

The engagement concluded with a debriefing session where both teams discussed potential pathways for future collaboration, including joint research initiatives, knowledge exchange, and strengthening scientific partnerships in HIV prevention and care. The visit reaffirmed the shared commitment of both organizations to advancing research and innovation in the fight against HIV.
