WORKSHOP: Strengthening institutional support systems for research excellence in Africa
From May 4 to 6, 2026, the Ifakara Health Institute participated in the Academic, Professional, and Administrative Staff (APAS) Workshop organized by the Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) at Moi University in Eldoret, Kenya.
The workshop brought together academic, professional, administrative, and research support staff from universities and research institutions across Africa to strengthen institutional support systems for PhD and postdoctoral researchers.
The three-day workshop focused on enhancing institutional responsiveness and building stronger research environments that support early-career researchers. Through interactive presentations, role-plays, discussions, and group activities, participants explored leadership capabilities, research governance, grant financial management, inclusivity in research systems, and the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in advancing research in Africa.
Representing the Ifakara Health Institute at the workshop were Senior Management Accountant Peter Temu, Senior Administration Officer Cecilia Francis, Senior Administrative Officer – Training Department and Ifakara's Research Officer, Protas Sayo.
Exploring leadership, governance, and innovation
The program also provided a platform for participants to reflect on the different roles that contribute to institutional research excellence and how collaboration across departments can strengthen research administration and support structures. Sessions such as “Understanding Different Research Roles in Our Colleges/Units,” “Leadership Capabilities in Our Institutions,” and “Research Governance” encouraged participants to exchange experiences and identify practical ways to improve institutional systems and processes.
Strengthening partnerships across Africa
The workshop also featured interactive engagements on grant financial management using CARTA case studies, institutional inclusivity, and governance structures that promote world-class research in African institutions. Participants further engaged in networking sessions and collaborative discussions aimed at strengthening partnerships and advancing research excellence across the continent.
The APAS workshop continues to play an important role in equipping institutional staff with the skills and knowledge needed to better support researchers and improve the overall research ecosystem in Africa.
