MASTERCLASS: Drowning prevention
Drowning is a preventable public health challenge that continues to impact communities across Tanzania. As part of the commemoration of World Drowning Prevention Day (25 July) and Ifakara Health Institute’s 70th Anniversary celebrations, IHI will host a virtual Drowning Prevention Masterclass bringing together researchers, emergency responders and community practitioners to discuss evidence, solutions and actions needed to reduce drowning-related deaths.

The Masterclass will feature contributions from Ifakara Health Institute (IHI), Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), Emergency Medicine and Emergency Disaster Organization (EMEDO), and Fire and Rescue Force, highlighting research findings, community-based prevention approaches, emergency response systems and opportunities for strengthening drowning prevention efforts in Tanzania.
Key discussions will explore the burden and risk factors associated with drowning, evidence-based prevention strategies, water safety education, community engagement and the role of coordinated action across sectors.
