Ifakara Health Institute deeply mourns the loss of Ali Hassan Mwinyi, the 2nd President of Tanzania, who passed away on February 29, 2024, at the age of 98.

A former school teacher turned politician, Mr. Mwinyi led Tanzania from November 5, 1985, to November 23, 1995, following his service as the 3rd President of Zanzibar from January 30, 1984, to October 24, 1985.

Tanzania’s current president, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, announced his passing, stating that the retired former president had been undergoing treatment for lung cancer.

He is remembered for his instrumental role in revitalizing Tanzania’s economy and political landscape. In 1992, President Mwinyi introduced multi-party democracy, allowing opposition parties to participate in elections. This marked a significant turning point in Tanzanian politics, allowing for a more diverse and dynamic political environment.

In honor of his contributions, Tanzania will observe seven days of mourning, with national flags flown at half-mast as directed by Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Ifakara Health Institute extends heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and the entire nation. May Ali Hassan Mwinyi's soul find eternal peace, and may his legacy inspire future generations to contribute positively to the development of Tanzania.
