The Ifakara Health Institute top management team, led by the Chief Executive Director, Dr. Honorati Masanja, today met with officials from the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG) responsible for Health to discuss strategic partnerships for addressing health challenges in Tanzania.

The PO-RALG Deputy Permanent Secretary for Health, Dr. Wilson Charles, led the Government delegation that met with the Ifakara management at Nashera Hotel in Dodoma for a high-level engagement. Dr. Masanja was accompanied by the Director of Science, Dr. Ally Olotu; and the Chief Operating Officer, Raphael Laizer.

The Ifakara team also included heads of research and training departments: Dr. Sally Mtenga (Health Systems, Interventions, Impact Evaluation and Policy); Dr. Emmanuel Kaindoa (Environmental Health and Ecological Sciences); Dr. Jerry Hella (Biomedical Research and Clinical Trials); and Dr. Kafuruki Shubis (Training and Capacity Building). Two research scientists also joined the team, namely Dr. Grace Mwangoka and Donat Shamba.

This was a half-day engagement, which started around 10 am in the morning through lunch time, focusing on strengthening existing collaborations, identifying news ones and letting the Ifakara management team familiarize with the PO-RALG, widely known as “Tamisemi” – one the key stakeholders in public health in Tanzania.

About PO-RALG (Tamisemi)

PO-RALG (President's Office - Regional Administration and Local Government), widely known as Tamisemi, is a government body in Tanzania responsible for overseeing regional administration and local government affairs. It is nested under the President's Office in Tanzania.

Tamisemi is responsible for coordinating and supervising regional administration and local government authorities across Tanzania. Its primary functions include policy formulation, coordination, monitoring, and evaluation of activities related to regional and local government administration.

Tamisemi also plays a crucial role in decentralization efforts in Tanzania, aiming to empower local authorities and enhance service delivery at the grassroots level.
