DISSEMINATION: Shinda Malaria project shares study findings in Dodoma

Today, the Shinda Malaria project shared the outcome of a significant “Therapeutic Efficacy Study (TES)” conducted last year in five sites in Tanzania. 

TES are studies focusing on the ability of a treatment or intervention to achieve the desired outcome in patients, effectively addressing their condition or symptoms. It's essentially how well a therapy works in real-world settings.

Held in Dodoma, the event drew a diverse array of stakeholders, including representatives from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID); the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG); the Tanzania’s Ministry of Health (MOH); the Tanzania’s National Malaria Control Program (NMCP), and members of the local health management committees where TES studies took place.

Dr. Dunstan Bishanga, Chief of Party for President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) funded-Shinda Malaria initiated the workshop, followed by remarks from officials of the Government of Tanzania (MOH and PO-RALG) and PMI/USAID.

Dr. Sijenunu Aron, speaking on behalf of the NMCP Program Manager, expressed gratitude to all attendees and initiated discussions on the disseminated TES results.

In her remarks, PMI Advisor, Dr. Sarah Blythe Ballard appreciate the efforts led by the country in fight against Malaria and further explains U.S. Government relentlessly desire to continue Ms. Stella Kajange, Malaria Coordinator from PO-RALG, representing Dr. Rashid Mfaume, Director of Health and Social Welfare Services, praised the collaborative efforts towards malaria elimination in Tanzania, acknowledging the significant contributions made by researchers through TES.

The workshop featured presentations by the Shinda Malaria TES Advisor, Dr. Kefas Mugittu, who outlined the evolution of Artemisinin Partial Resistance and Tanzania's position. Dr. Mugittu provided insights into the TES setup in Tanzania and offered updates on the implementation of the TES in 2023.
