APPOINTMENT:  Ifakara scientist to sit in the national genetic research advisory committee

On May 7, 2024, Dr. John Jingu, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, spearheaded the launch of the Professional Human Genetics Committee, which will provide assistance and advisory support to the government on matters concerning Human DNA (HDNA) research and forensic sciences in the country.

The committee, launched in Dodoma, is in accordance with the directives outlined in Chapter 73 of the Human Genetics Law and aims to ensure the proper maintenance and confidentiality of human genetic information, in strict adherence to the provisions set forth in the Human DNA Act No. 73.

 Additionally, the committee will support and advise the Government Chemist Laboratory Authority (GCLA) to facilitate the assessment and authorization of institutes and laboratories seeking to conduct Human DNA analyses.

Appointed members of the committee include Dr. Deborah Sumari, a seasoned researcher from Ifakara Health Institute. Her expertise and contributions will play a crucial role in advancing the committee's objectives and enhancing the governance framework surrounding human genetics research and data management.

The establishment of the Professional Human Genetics Committee signifies a significant step forward in the implementation of the Human Genetics Law, reflecting the government's commitment to upholding ethical standards and ensuring the responsible use of human genetic information for the betterment of the society.
