FORUM: Ifakara discusses malaria burden, vaccines at global festival
The Ifakara Health Institute’s Director of Science, Dr. Ally Olotu, participated in the Africa in the World Festival, held from September 4-7, 2024, in Stellenbosch, South Africa.
During the festival, Dr. Olotu presented in a session titled "Cracking the Malaria Code." He highlighted the malaria burden and ongoing efforts to combat the disease, with a focus on vaccines. Dr. Adrian Hill from Oxford University, who also participated, emphasized the development of the R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine.
This vaccine was developed by the University of Oxford in collaboration with the Serum Institute of India, with Ifakara Health Institute conducting clinical trials between 2021-2022 to protect children from malaria. In October 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) officially recommended the vaccine for use.
The two scientists joined a panel discussion moderated by Dele Olojede, founder and host of Africa in the World, to discuss the challenges associated with manufacturing and distributing the vaccine and the steps needed to overcome these obstacles.
