ENGAGEMENT: Danish delegation, Ifakara discuss strategic cooperation
A Danish delegation at Mikocheni.

A delegation from the Danish Embassy in Tanzania visited Ifakara Health Institute offices in Dar es Salaam to discuss, among other things, strategic cooperation between the two parties and getting updates on the ‘Safe Delivery App’ project which the Embassy funds.

The team, led by the Embassy’s Counsellor for Political, Health & Rights, Ms. Lena Hothes, had a two-hour discussion with the Ifakara team which was led by three senior officials: Senior Research Scientist Donat Shamba, Chief Operation Officer Martin Mfikwa, and Grants & Contracts Office Head Zawadi Mageni Mboma.

While the Mfikwa briefed the visiting Danish team on the overview of the Institute’s operations and mission in improving people’s health and wellbeing, Shamba provided updates on the implementation of the ‘Safe Delivery App’ project – which focuses on empowering skilled birth attendants with direct and instant access to evidence-based and up-to-date clinical guidelines on Basic Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care.

The project commenced its activities in January this year and is scheduled to last until the end of next year. It builds on successes gained in the previous study implemented only in Dodoma a couple of years ago, which now will be extended to all zones in Tanzania.

Hothes, who was accompanied by two delegates from the Embassy, Gradeline Miya and Olivia Baeki, briefed the Ifakara team on the mission’s strategic cooperation mainly focusing on the health sector which she led.

About the App

The Safe Delivery App is a smartphone application that provides skilled birth attendants with direct and instant access to evidence-based and up-to-date clinical guidelines on Basic Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care.

The App leverages the growing ubiquity of mobile phones to provide life-saving information and guidance through easy-to-understand animated instruction videos, action cards and drug lists. It can serve as a training tool both in pre- and in-service training, and equips birth attendants even in the most remote areas with a powerful on-the-job reference tool. Learn more about the App.
