From February 25–28, 2025, Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) and the Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) held the second PhD Supervision Training workshop in Bagamoyo, building on the January session to strengthen effective supervision.

Expert-led training for effective mentorship

Facilitated by a distinguished panel of experts, the training featured renowned scholars, including Prof. Sharadhuli Kimera (Sokoine University of Agriculture), Prof. Sarah Moore (Ifakara Health Institute), Prof. Fredros Okumu (University of Glasgow), Dr. John Otieno Oredo (University of Nairobi), and Prof. Doreen Mloka (Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences). Their diverse expertise provided invaluable insights into the evolving landscape of PhD supervision and research mentorship.

Addressing key challenges in PhD supervision

Participants engaged in dynamic and interactive sessions covering critical topics such as scientific integrity, student detachment, and mentoring strategies. The workshop also explored emerging and re-emerging challenges in supervision, emphasizing quality mentorship and institutional roles in maintaining high standards. Key discussions included: Scientific Integrity and the Supervision Process, PhD Student Detachment and Mentoring – Addressing issues related to student engagement and academic progression, Psychology of Supervisor-Supervisee Relationships, AI in Academia and Research, Quality Assurance and Equity in Supervision

This initiative underscores Ifakara’s dedication to building a strong research ecosystem that empowers scientists to tackle global health challenges and drive impactful innovation in their respective fields.
