SEMINAR: Ifakara shares empowerment initiatives on data at University of Glasgow
Dr. Samson Kiware, Principal Research Scientist, delivered a talk titled "Building Sustainable Capacity in Modeling and Data Science in Tanzania," at the University of Glasgow, UK.

On March 7, 2025, Ifakara Health Institute presented its groundbreaking work in capacity strengthening of data science and mathematical modeling at a seminar at the University of Glasgow, UK.

Dr. Samson Kiware, Principal Research Scientist, delivered a talk titled "Building Sustainable Capacity in Modeling and Data Science in Tanzania," highlighting Tanzania's efforts to strengthen its capacity to combat diseases like malaria.

Dr. Kiware discussed the Data and Modelling for Decision Making (DM4DM) initiative, a project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation that is aimed at strengthening data science and mathematical modeling capacity to address infectious disease challenges in Tanzania and beyond.

This project, led by Dr. Kiware, hosts a team of 20+ youngsters who are growing their data skills through different pathways including formal education, training, and fieldwork activity. In addition to this, he talked about the “Assessing the biology and public health importance of anopheles stephensi in Africa” (AnoSTEP AfriKa) and “Modelling for Decisions in a Dynamic Africa” (MoDD Africa) projects – two key initiatives that are using the power of data science to combat malaria.

The seminar aimed to raise awareness of these impactful projects and explore collaboration opportunities, including PhD studentships, training, mentorship, and supervisory roles.

Ifakara’s data science focus

Ifakara aims to develop a skilled workforce to support malaria programs in Tanzania and beyond, contributing to the ultimate goal of malaria elimination. Through collaborations with local and international institutions, Ifakara provides training opportunities, including MSc and PhD programs, supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and partners like the University of Dar es Salaam and UC Berkeley. The institute also offers technical support in mathematical modeling, statistics, machine learning, and software development to improve health outcomes.

New projects beyond Tanzania

The AnoSTEP project investigates the role of the invasive mosquito species Anopheles stephensi in malaria transmission across Africa. With funding from the Wellcome Trust, AnoSTEP aims to assess how this species spreads malaria in diverse African regions, involving institutes like KEMRI in Kenya and Nigeria's National Institute for Medical Research.

The MoDD Africa project focuses on climate change’s impact on malaria vectors. In partnership with institutions in DRC and Nigeria, it will develop modeling systems to help public health decision-makers respond to shifting malaria transmission patterns. This project, also funded by the Wellcome Trust, runs from November 2024 to October 2028 and aims to strengthen Africa's capacity to address climate-related malaria challenges.
