Karume Day, observed annually on April 7th, honors the life and legacy of Abeid Amani Karume, the first President of Zanzibar. Born on August 4th, 1905, in Nyasaland (now Malawi), Karume was a key figure in the Afro-Shirazi Party and played a vital role in Zanzibar's independence.

His leadership during the 1964 Zanzibar Revolution was pivotal, but his life was tragically cut short by assassination on April 7th, 1972. Karume Day, established in 1973, celebrates his contributions to Zanzibar’s development in education, healthcare, and agriculture.
