From April 23 to 24, 2025, the Scaling up One health System (SOS) and GAVI rabies Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) projects at the Ifakara Health Institute convened a Process Mapping Workshop in Dar es Salaam.

The workshop convened government stakeholders from national to local levels to collaboratively map out the delivery processes for routine immunization and human rabies vaccination services in Tanzania.

Defining the integration challenge

The primary objective of the workshop was to analyze current operational workflows and determine how human rabies vaccination (PEP) can be effectively integrated into Tanzania’s routine immunization services.

In her opening remarks, Valentina Sanga, Program Officer of the One Health Section under the Prime Minister’s Office, underscored the importance of multisectoral collaboration in combating rabies. She highlighted the national commitment to increasing PEP availability and achieving the global goal of zero human rabies deaths by 2030.

Analyzing systems, redesigning solutions

Participants engaged in the process mapping exercises to evaluate current workflows, identify operational bottlenecks, and explore opportunities for integrating human rabies vaccine delivery into routine immunization services.

The key focus areas included, ensuring all relevant sectors and stakeholders are involved in the integration process, validating the accuracy and completeness of steps related to IVD, PEP delivery, and data transmission, outlining necessary activities such as policy updates, training programs, task reassignments, and workflow redesigns and developing a clear roadmap to guide the integration.

Towards a sustainable, nationwide solution

The workshop marked an important step towards operationalizing a nationwide integrated rabies vaccination system, contributing to Tanzania’s long-term goal of eliminating human rabies deaths by improving access, coordination, and sustainability.
