MEETING: Improving health data accuracy with new population projections

This week in Morogoro, the Ifakara Health Institute joined health data experts and stakeholders in a major step toward enhancing the accuracy of Tanzania’s health indicators. From July 28–31, 2025, a national workshop was held at Edema Hotel to update the District Health Information Software 2 (DHIS2) with new population projections based on the 2022 national census.
Accurate population data is the backbone of reliable health statistics. Whether measuring vaccination coverage or tracking maternal health outcomes, population-based indicators rely on current figures. The updated projections—covering the period 2022 to 2035—are expected to improve the accuracy of health indicators reported through DHIS2.
The workshop brought together a diverse team from the Ministry of Health (Central M&E, Directorate M&E & DRMCH), the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Regional Health Management Teams (RHMTs), program M&E teams (IVD, NASHCOP, Malaria), UDSM Lab, HISP Tanzania, and the Ifakara Health Institute under the COUNTDOWN TO 2030 initiative.
By aligning digital health systems with the latest census data, Tanzania took an important step toward evidence-based decision-making, improved health planning, and stronger service delivery nationwide.
