TRAINING: Building skills for better newborn care data

The Newborn Essential Solutions and Technologies (NEST360) program, implemented in Tanzania by the Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) and partners, convened a two-day data refresher training for health workers in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the President’s Office – Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG) in Dar es Salaam from August 8–9, 2025.
The training brought together 26 data collectors from regional and district hospitals in the program’s first and second phases. Participants represented health facilities from Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, Mbeya, and Mwanza regions, including Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital, Amana RRH, Mwananyamala RRH, Muhimbili National Hospital – Upanga, Muhimbili – Mloganzila, Temeke RRH, Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC), Ubungo DH, Kivule DH, Mabwepande DH, and Kigamboni DH.
The NEST360 program supports the Government of Tanzania in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3.2 (SDG 3.2) by reducing neonatal mortality through improved hospital care for newborns. Accurate, timely, and reliable data is essential to meeting this goal.
Over the course of the workshop, participants reviewed key indicators used in neonatal care monitoring and explored best practices for data management to support evidence-based decision-making. The sessions also addressed common challenges in data collection and provided hands-on guidance to strengthen health information quality at the facility level.
By equipping data collectors with updated skills and a deeper understanding of neonatal data processing, the training aimed to improve the accuracy of hospital records — enabling health facilities to make informed decisions that can save newborn lives.
