Documenting the Digital Transformation of Tanzania’s Immunization Program - "GAVI-IVD"

Tanzania has made significant progress in reducing childhood illness and death through strong immunization and newborn health programs. To build on these achievements, the country introduced digital health solutions to strengthen its immunization system. These include the Tanzania Immunization Registry (TImR), the Vaccine Information Management System (VIMS), and Remote Temperature Monitoring (RTM) for vaccines.

This project, led by researchers from the Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) in collaboration with the Immunization and Vaccine Development (IVD) program, aims to document the journey, milestones, successes, challenges, and lessons learned from adopting these digital tools.

The study uses a mixed-methods approach—combining desk reviews, stakeholder interviews, and analysis of system data—to understand how digital platforms have improved vaccine tracking, service delivery, reporting, and decision-making. It also looks at challenges such as infrastructure, capacity, and operational barriers, while highlighting solutions and best practices.

Ultimately, the project will provide evidence-based recommendations to strengthen, scale up, and sustain digital health interventions for immunization and broader health system improvements in Tanzania.
