Mathematical modeler focusing on infectious diseases

Victoria James Githu is a Research Scientist at Ifakara Health Institute specializing in mathematical modeling and data science, focusing on infectious diseases. In her role, she actively leads scientific projects, particularly in malaria vector control.

With a strong mathematical foundation, she excels in managing and analyzing project data to improve community well-being. She is committed to professional development, actively participates in workshops and conferences and contributes to scientific manuscripts, establishing herself as a leading research scientist in infectious disease modeling. Her project engagements include leading a study on malaria vector sampling tools in Tanzania and working on modeling the impact of a locally tailored approach for reporting febrile malaria cases in endemic villages using openMalaria. She provides data analysis and technical support to malaria control programs in Tanzania (NMCP), Rwanda, and Zanzibar (ZAMEP).

Victoria has received recognition with travel awards to prestigious events, including the 8th PAMCA conference, the ASTMH annual meeting, and the IDM symposium. In September 2023, she received the PAMCA Women in Vector Control Excellence award and is a proud PAMCA and Tanzania Women in Mathematics (TWM) member.

Victoria holds a BS in Actuarial Sciences, a MS in Mathematical Modeling from the University of Dar es Salaam and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Glasgow. Her Ph.D. project focuses on improving vector control trials to revolutionize the evaluation of interventions against vector-borne diseases. Her research aims to influence global policy-making in vector control and advance methodologies for tackling infectious diseases transmitted by vectors.
