Andrea Martin Kipingu is a Research Scientist within the Environmental Health and Ecological Sciences Department at Ifakara Health Institute, where he focuses on developing a team of data scientists and mathematical modelers to support National Malaria Control Programs. He currently serves as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the School of Biodiversity, One Health, and Veterinary Medicine, University of Glasgow, UK.
Kipingu's research interests center on disease modeling, particularly addressing public health challenges related to climate change, and has made significant contributions to Ifakara projects analyzing the impact of climate on malaria transmission. Currently, he is involved in research projects focused on modeling malaria vector populations to enhance vector control testing and implementation.
Kipingu is also a key contributor to advancing data science and mathematical modeling in sub-Saharan Africa. He contributed to the WHO’s scoping review on climate change, malaria, and neglected tropical diseases for the COP28 report. Additionally, he contributed to the Medical Research Council (MRC) project assessing the impact of climate change on malaria transmission and optimizing vector control strategies. His work involves developing theoretical models and statistical power analysis frameworks, showcasing his commitment to advancing vector control research.
Kipingu’s academic journey is driven by his intellectual curiosity and passion for mathematics and its practical applications. He received a scholarship for the 13th Annual Summer Institute in Statistics and Modeling in Infectious Diseases (SISMID) at the University of Washington and a Ph.D. scholarship under the Lord Kelvin Adam Smith (LKAS) leadership grant at the University of Glasgow. He was recognized as the Best First-Year Student in BSc. with Education (Informatics and Mathematics) at Sokoine University of Agriculture.
Kipingu won the poster competition at the 2023 Pan-African Mosquito Control Association (PAMCA) annual conference and exhibitions in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and was subsequently awarded a travel grant.
