Maxmillian G. Mpina is a highly qualified Senior Research Scientist with extensive expertise in immunology and infectious diseases. Prior to this, he held roles such as Postdoctoral Scientific Collaborator at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, and Head of Research Laboratory Section (Immunologist) at the Bioko Island Malaria Elimination Program (BIMEP).
His academic journey includes a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences, a BSc in Biotechnology & Laboratory Sciences, an MSc in Infection Biology and Epidemiology, and a PhD in Microbiology.
Maxmillian has contributed significantly to various research projects, demonstrating leadership and expertise in immunology. Noteworthy achievements include his involvement in the phase 3 clinical trial of Mosquirix (RTS,S), the first WHO-approved human malaria vaccine, and the establishment of WHO-certified COVID-19 molecular testing laboratories in Equatorial Guinea.
Maxmillian is currently leading the SumayaVac-1 (SUM-101) study, a full-length recombinant MSP-1 based malaria vaccine trial, and serving as a co-PI in an epidemiological study investigating the dynamics of natural immunity to malaria in adults. His research interests focus on understanding the cellular and humoral basis of vaccine-induced and naturally acquired immunity.
