Lead, Malaria Atlas Project East Africa Node

Dr. Susan Rumisha is a Principal Research Scientist, a geospatial modeller and the Lead of the Malaria Atlas Project East Africa (MAP EA) Node at the Ifakara Health Institute. The EA Node is a newly formed African-based regional office for MAP established as part of the decentralization vision reflecting to an active response to the growing demand across the malaria control community for country-specific analyses, and the necessity of enhancing leadership and technical capacity for endemic-country modelers. This Node is envisioned to bolster the technical support provided to national malaria programs (NMPs) through skills enhancement to programs and EMCRs, cultivation of effective relationships and strengthening African institutional capacities for R&D in advanced modelling.

Susan’s extensive expertise revolves around the development and deployment of cutting-edge geospatial analytical frameworks for malaria. Primarily focusing on creation of subnational-to-global malaria risk maps, estimation of malaria disease burden and spatio-temporal coverage and utilization of core malaria interventions e.g., effective antimalarials. Her portfolio encompasses the critical evaluation of malaria-health systems, crucial for informed decision-making in malaria control. She is passionate about fostering utilization of data-driven evidence to improve malaria decision-making processes. She firmly believes that the future success and impact of malaria control efforts rely on utilizing high-quality and robust evidence generated from a well-analysed malaria data. Dr. Rumisha is affiliated with the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) in Tanzania, the Telethon Kids Institute and Curtin University in Perth in WA, Australia.
