Lewis David Batao is a dynamic Laboratory Scientist at Ifakara Health Institute in Bagamoyo, Tanzania, leading the charge in molecular laboratory operations and public health initiatives. Armed with a Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology and Laboratory Sciences from Sokoine University of Agriculture (2017-2020), Lewis has cultivated a wealth of hands-on technical expertise in disease diagnosis and drug sensitivity assays.
His professional journey began as an Intern at Ifakara Health Institute, where he immersed himself in various laboratory sections, including Entomology, Immunology, Parasitology, and more. Over the years, Lewis has been instrumental in driving impactful projects, such as the digital cough study, which revolutionized TB screening by utilizing cough sounds for diagnosis. His pivotal role in validating Truenat devices for TB point-of-care testing has significantly expanded access to diagnostic services in Tanzania.
Lewis's commitment to advancing public health extends beyond the laboratory. He has played key roles in projects like Uhuru TB and Family Planning Activity and TB CAPT, collaborating with implementing partners to enhance disease surveillance and intervention strategies. As a member of the Biotechnology Association of Tanzania, Lewis remains at the forefront of cutting-edge research and innovation, striving to revolutionize drug and vaccine development for global health challenges. With a keen interest in infectious biology and computational technologies, Lewis is poised to make lasting contributions to the field, driving forward the fight against diseases worldwide.
