Laboratory Scientist spearheading molecular analysis for public health

Tunu Mwamlima is a laboratory scientist with a Master's in Public Health Research from the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) in Arusha (2020-2022). Her academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology and Laboratory Sciences from Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) in Morogoro (2013-2016), following an Advanced Certificate of Secondary Combination (CBG) at Loleza High School in Mbeya (2011-2013) and a Certificate of Secondary Education at St. James Sangu Secondary School in Songwe (2007-2010).

With over six years of professional experience, Tunu has demonstrated proficiency in various laboratory procedures and techniques, including qPCR using Bio-Rad CFX system for detecting and quantifying pathogens like Plasmodium species, SARS-COV-2, Human Papillomavirus, and Arboviruses. She is adept at performing conversion PCR for detecting emerging and re-emerging viruses, malaria parasite genotyping, and bacterial identification in environmental samples. Tunu's expertise extends to ELISA assays for clinical trial and epidemiological studies.

As a member of professional organizations like Biotechnology and Laboratory Sciences and STEMi-Africa, Tunu actively contributes to the advancement of laboratory science. Her involvement in One Health projects, such as PREDICT and VISHA, showcases her dedication to interdisciplinary collaboration for holistic health interventions. Currently working under core at Ifakara Health Institute, Tunu plays a pivotal role in projects like Shinda Malaria and Child Study, conducting molecular analyses from sample extraction to sequencing using the MiSeq platform. Her relentless pursuit of excellence in laboratory science underscores her commitment to advancing public health research and improving health outcomes for communities.
