Expert data scientist in malaria surveillance and eradication

Joseph Joachim Joseph is a seasoned Data Scientist specializing in public health, particularly in malaria surveillance and eradication efforts. With a wealth of experience spanning over a decade, Joseph has played instrumental roles in various projects and initiatives aimed at combating malaria in Tanzania. 

His expertise lies in data management, analysis, and project management, with a strong emphasis on monitoring and evaluation frameworks. In his current role at Ifakara Health Institute since February 2024, Joseph serves as a Data Scientist for the PMI Shinda (Defeat) Malaria project, providing vital support to the National Malaria Control Programme in malaria surveillance and analysis. 

Prior to this, he worked at AKROS from October 2022 to December 2023 as a Senior Data Scientist, coordinating support for NMCP and regional health teams, and contributing to the development of malaria surveillance systems and capacity building.

Before his tenure at AKROS, Joseph served as a Surveillance & MERLA advisor for the Okoa Maisha Dhibiti Malaria Activity at RTI International from December 2018 to November 2022. Here, he enhanced the capacity of NMCP and the Zanzibar Malaria Elimination Program (ZAMEP) in various health information systems, playing a crucial role in strengthening malaria surveillance efforts.

Joseph's career trajectory also includes roles at Management Science for Health, Benjamnin Mkapa Foundation, and RTI International, where he provided database support, laboratory systems administration, and ICT support for health information systems, respectively. Throughout his professional journey, Joseph has demonstrated proficiency in data management, analysis, and reporting, utilizing various computer systems and statistical packages.

In addition to his practical skills, Joseph holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, earned in November 2013. Currently, he is pursuing a Master of Science in Project Management Monitoring and Evaluation in Health from Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, with an expected graduation date in November 2024.
