VISIT:  Ifakara, WHO discuss future of malaria research initiatives

On July 22, 2024, Ifakara Health Institute hosted Dr. Li Xiao Hong, Technical Officer for Malaria Elimination Certification at the World Health Organisation's Global Malaria Programme. This visit marked a significant milestone in collaborative efforts to combat malaria in Tanzania.

Dr. Hong was welcomed by Dr. Ally Olotu, Director of Science at Ifakara. They discussed the status and future of Ifakara's malaria research initiatives, including the progress and impact of the collaborative Rufiji project with the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

They also highlighted advancements in malaria vaccine research and the ongoing malaria implementation program at Ifakara. Dr. Hong praised the institute's work and emphasized the importance of strengthening local research capacity to accelerate malaria control and elimination.

Dr. Hong toured the Ifakara offices in Mikocheni, Dar es Salaam with Dr. Zawadi Mageni Mboma, Senior Grants & Contracts Officer at Ifakara. During the tour, she interacted with scientists and learned about their innovative approaches to malaria research, expressing admiration for their dedication and expertise.

A key highlight was Dr. Hong's commitment to fostering collaboration, offering to connect Ifakara with her research networks in China, supporting mutual learning and scientific exchanges.

Ifakara is grateful for Dr. Hong’s visit and looks forward to strengthening its collaboration with WHO and other international partners to achieve the goal of malaria elimination.
