The Daily Express print feature story.

We at Ifakara Health Institute are delighted to have been visited by The Daily Express and the team from the charity Malaria No More UK. They witnessed firsthand the vital work our scientists are doing to fight malaria, showcasing decades of research, innovation, and the need for continued support to protect communities across Africa.

Published on August 18, 2025, this feature, “The only good mosquito is a dead one” — on the frontline of the fight against malaria, by Hanna Geissler, Health Editor, was among the outputs of the visit. It highlights the diverse work carried out at the Institute.

The feature article covers the Visual Analysis of Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets to Maximize Universal Access (ViALLIN) study, a visit to our Vector Control and Product Testing Unit (VCPTU), an internationally renowned facility for high-quality evaluations of new vector control products for private industry, product development partnerships, and regulatory bodies including WHO Prequalification.

The article also explores the MosqDiet project, the Transmission Zero program, an international initiative involving Tanzanian partners and researchers from Imperial College London focused on developing gene drives to render mosquitoes incapable of transmitting malaria, and the Deep Cities project, which uses deep learning and remote sensing to assess the risk of mosquito-borne diseases in Dar es Salaam.
